Homeless Services Council House Monitors
Position Summary
The Housing Monitor plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for guests at the homeless shelter. This position is responsible for monitoring shelter activities, enforcing shelter policies, responding to guest needs, and supporting daily operations to ensure the well-being of all residents, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor shelter areas to ensure safety, security, and compliance with shelter rules and policies
- Conduct regular walk-throughs of the facility and document observations as required
- Greet guests and visitors in a respectful, trauma-informed manner
- Enforce shelter guidelines fairly and consistently, using de-escalation techniques when needed
- Respond to conflicts, emergencies, or crises and follow established protocols
- Assist with guest check-in/check-out procedures and bed assignments
- Maintain accurate logs, incident reports, and shift notes
- Support cleanliness and organization of common areas
- Communicate effectively with shelter staff, supervisors, and partner agencies
- Provide basic information, referrals, and assistance to guests as appropriate
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Previous experience in a shelter, social services, security, or customer service role preferred
- Ability to work with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or substance use disorders with empathy and professionalism
- Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills
- Ability to remain calm in high-stress or emergency situations
- Basic computer and documentation skills
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
- HMIS experience preferred (available training)
